Curb ... Roadside ... Appeal: Spotlight on Cheryl Sheppard

Valley Green Landscaping, Inc., a certified small minority business in Northern Virginia, has been providing excellent customer service and solutions since 1989. Led by David and Cheryl Sheppard, VGL specializes in highway erosion control, restoration, wetland services and landscaping for client such as the Virginia Department of Transportation, Maryland Department of Transportation, United States Park Authority, several utility companies and a host of prime contractors.

One of the characteristics that sets VGL apart from the competition is its commitment to excellent service: "We are customer focused and comply with 100 percent of contract requirements. We meet or exceed performance standards. We respond promptly and flexibly to project officers direction and guidance."

VGL maintains active membership in several transportation organizations, and of course, NVBCC. "Becoming a member of the Chamber was another way of empowering our business economically by networking and sharing business tips with other black owned businesses in the Chamber," says Cheryl. "I also enjoy the many benefits that the Chamber provides, as well as being active on a variety of Committees."

It all started with a lawn mower and a pickup truck. "We had a very large clientele of residentials in the Fairfax County area" Cheryl remembers. "We then diversified working with the Virginia Department of Transportation, providing maintenance at six rest stops in Northern Virginia." Not long after, VGL moved into roadside development and "the rest is history! "

VGL recently attained SBA's 8(A) Certification. "This new certification and the potential for our company to grow is the new journey for us." Cheryl continues, "The marketing efforts, business efforts, the highs and the lows are all part of the reward and satisfaction gained while moving to the next level. We're looking forward to entering the Federal arena and increasing our sales by at least 15% in the developmental stages of the program."

Valley Green Landscaping has also introduced innovative and cost saving practices for its customers. "Every customer enjoys saving money!"

Spotlight on Gaea L. Honeycutt

Founding member Gaea L. Honeycutt delivers high quality social policy analysis services and marketing communication to businesses, government agencies and nonprofits through two brands -- G.L. Honeycutt Consulting, LLC
and Brazen Maven (SM) marketing Communications. And, Weirding Word®, which used to house communications, is now a publishing house.

As a co-founder of NVBCC, she felt there was a need for an organization focused on black-owned businesses. "I was tired of clocking thousands of miles in my car to travel to Maryland and DC every time there was a supplier diversity opportunity. We estimated there were 4,500 black-owned businesses in Northern Virginia like the four of us, not to mention all of the minority-owned firms who make the trek into the Commonwealth to do business as well."
