Black Chamber Gala Raises Funds and Celebrates Service and Achievement

 2nd Annual NVBCC Gala
2014 NVBCC 2nd Annual Gala

Alexandria, VA – Thousands of dollars were raised for entrepreneurial education and a scholarship fund at the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce’s 2nd Annual Awards and Scholarship Gala. The evening featured the presentation of eight awards to regional leaders and businesses and a special performance saluting veterans and active military personnel.

NVBCC awarded its first scholarship earlier this year to TC Williams High School alumnus Amen Hailegiorgis, and will open the application process for the 2015 scholarship this winter.  Hailegiorgis wrote to the Chamber, describing his pursuit of a degree in Finance and an entrepreneurial project in which he and a team of students are launching a mobile application.
The 2014 Champion Award was presented to Antonio Doss, Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Washington Metropolitan Area District Office, for his advocacy for small and minority-owned businesses, and contributions to the community.  His keynote presentation focused on strategies for business growth and advancement, and partnering with the SBA to accomplish those goals.

For the first year, NVBCC presented the Chairman’s Make a Difference Award to co-founder and past chairman Gaea L. Honeycutt for contributions that have made a significant difference in the success and activities of the Chamber.

“When I served in the military, we were meeting to determine how to recognize someone who had contributed significantly to our efforts,” said NVBCC chairman Dr. D.R. Butler as he introduced the award. “After reviewing each item and accomplishment, we realized that he had simply made a difference on a scale that was difficult to define.”
